Emanuel Sweerts (1552–1612) was a Dutch pharmacist, botanist, and publisher known for his significant contributions to the field of botany during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Sweerts played a pivotal role in popularizing the study of plants and their illustrations.

One of his notable works is the "Florilegium" titled "Florum et Coronariarum Odoratarumque nonnullarum Herbarum Historia," which translates to "A History of Flowers, Garlands, and of Some Fragrant and Other Herbs." Published in 1612, posthumously after Sweerts' death, this florilegium was an illustrated collection of flowers and plants, featuring detailed botanical illustrations accompanied by descriptions. The term "florilegium" refers to a compilation of botanical illustrations, often accompanied by written descriptions or commentaries.

Sweerts' "Florilegium" was a significant contribution to the botanical literature of its time, reflecting the growing interest in the study of plants and their aesthetics during the Renaissance. His work, combining scientific accuracy with artistic beauty, paved the way for future generations of botanists and illustrators, leaving an enduring impact on the history of botanical illustration.
